Karen has been a singer for many years commencing formally in a church choir back in 1978. It was here that she learned to read music as part of the choir training program. Migrating to Melbourne from Birmingham, England in 1996 she first joined SSC as a tenor in 1997 and travelled to competition in Adelaide with the group in May 1998.
After a break, due to family logistics, Karen re-joined SSC in 2003. It was at this time that she was the most active on the board and music team in various roles including treasurer, President, tenor section leader and assistant to the then director, Lorraine Stackpoole. In 2007 she commenced the SCRAP arrangers program for barbershop music- and so nearly finished- only one bit to do now!
In 2013 she stepped down from her role as assistant director to Catherine Bechaz and turned her focus back to her other favourite hobby, tennis. Since then she has remained as section leader for the tenors and has stood in on occasion for Catherine during rehearsals and performances as required.
Karen is a keen quartet singer and has been the tenor part of various non competing quartets since 2005. She has attended every Regional Competition the chorus has entered during her membership of SSC.
In April, 2017, when Catherine Bechaz had to step down as director, Karen graciously agreed to be our new director, and we are very excited to see where this new journey will take us!
